Virtual Screenings FAQs

This guide will help you navigate how to watch Reeling 2021 films online. Virtual screenings are being hosted on a different streaming platform this year, so please read all of the FAQs carefully. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, contact us at reelingcustomerservice@gmail.com. Test Your Browser

Click on the Streaming Test page to test your browser. If you are able to play the video on that page, then your browser is compatible for streaming Reeling 2021 films.

Can I watch films if I’m located outside of Illinois or the United States?

Feature film programs will be geo-blocked to Illinois or the U.S. Check the film pages for details before purchasing. Short programs will be available worldwide with the exception of KEEP GOING, DEAL WITH THE REAL, and GLOBAL TRANS STORIES which will be geo-blocked to the U.S.

How long are films available to stream? 

Films will be available to stream for a period of 7 days each. Once you hit play on a movie, you have 24 hours to finish watching it at any point during the 7-day period. Check the film pages for dates of availability.

How does my Streaming Ticket or Pass work?

Single Streaming Ticket

  • Locate your confirmation email which includes a “Watch” button.
  • Click on the “Watch” button to access the virtual screening for the film or program you purchased.
  • Before you click the “Play” button on the video player, please check the following:
    • You’re using the device and browser you would like to watch the entire film or program on.
    • If you plan to cast the film or program to your TV, make sure you are on the same WiFi network as your TV for best results.
  • Once you press play, the film will only be available for 24 hours.
  • You do not need to click anything throughout the viewing experience. Each film in the program will play automatically.
  • If you have any trouble with playback, you can refresh the page without losing access.
  • No extensions will be allowed for unwatched or unfinished films or programs.

All-Access Streaming Pass

  • Locate your confirmation email which includes your personalized All-Access Streaming Pass link.
  • Click on the “Watch” button provided to access the full catalog of virtual screenings to choose from. We recommend bookmarking this page for easy access throughout the festival.
  • Click on the film or program you would like to redeem. Please note that films will only be available to watch during their availability window.
  • Before you click the “Play” button on the video player, please check the following:
    • You’re using the device and browser you would like to watch the entire film or program on.
    • If you plan to cast the film or program to your TV, make sure you are on the same WiFi network as your TV for best results.
  • Once you press play, the film will only be available for 24 hours.

I got a ticket but didn’t get a confirmation email. 

Check the junk, spam, and/or promotions folder of your inbox. Sometimes the confirmation emails are filtered to those folders instead of the main inbox. If you still can’t find it, email reelingcustomerservice@gmail.com for assistance. Please allow us up to 24 hours to respond.

What does it mean if the film says “Sold Out”?

Some virtual screenings have limited capacity, and films can “sell out” which will be indicated by “Sold Out.“ 

How long do I have to watch a film once I hit play?

You will have 24 hours to finish watching the film once you hit play. Please note that even though the films are available until 11:59 PM CT on the last scheduled day, we highly recommend you purchase a ticket and begin viewing the virtual screening at least 3 hours before the window closes. 

Can I stop and start watching again? 

Yes, as long as you remain in the same browser and stay within the 24 viewing allowance.

Why is a film no longer available?

Films are only available for a limited time and can only be viewed within the 7-day viewing window.

How do I adjust the volume on the video player?

To make volume controls visible, hover your cursor over the video player. Click on the sound icon and slide the volume bar to adjust the volume.

How do I view films in full screen?

Hover your cursor over the video player, then click on the full-screen icon (looks like a square) to make it full screen.

Can I watch content on my iPhone/iPad?

Yes, you can watch content using Safari on iOS 11.2 or later. Please note that you must have “Screen Mirroring” turned off for content to play.

Can I watch content on my Android Device?

Yes, you can watch content using Chrome on Android 6.0 or later. 

Can I Chromecast content?

You can Chromecast from a Chrome web browser on PC and Mac computers as well as Android devices by selecting the cast button in the bottom right-hand side of the player. 

Can I AirPlay to my AppleTV?

You can AirPlay from most browsers if you have Apple TV by selecting the AirPlay button in the bottom right-hand side of the player.

Why do I see a black screen if I am watching content with AirPlay on my TV?

You likely have “Screen Mirroring” turned on in your device settings. Please turn off the screen mirroring setting and start AirPlay by selecting the AirPlay button in the bottom right-hand side of the player.

Why do I see a black screen after the pre-roll if I am casting to Chromecast?

Some Chromecast versions cannot support transitions from one video to another. If this happens, turn off casting and restart it once the film starts playing.

Why does video playback stall or not play smoothly?

We use adaptive bitrate streaming which means the streaming quality will automatically adjust based on your internet speed. If your internet connection is poor or inconsistent you may experience problems during playback. If you’re on Wi-Fi, try moving closer to your router.

My movie won’t play! (General troubleshooting steps)

  • Please confirm that you are not on a VPN (Virtual Private Network). The streaming platform’s content protection protocol does not allow VPN access.
  • When viewing on-demand content, please ensure that you have enabled third-party cookies in your internet browser.
  • Make sure you have auto-play videos enabled for this site. If you have turned off auto-play videos, or notice that when a new video loads, it does not automatically play, please enable auto-play for this site. Here are instructions for Safari, Firefox, and Edge.
